Modern Political Philosophy 2020 – Beyond the State and the Citizen

Thomas HobbesWe would like to invite you to (partially online) conference organized by the Department of Philosophy of the Prague University of Economics and Business. The conference will take place on September 17-18, 2020. Presented papers will be published in the edited volume, published by the Prague University of Economics and Business.

Topics:

  • Key figures of modern political philosophy (16th – 19th century): Machiavelli, Hobbes, Locke, Smith, Rousseau, Kant, Hegel, Burke, Bentham, Mill, Marx, Tocqueville and others.
  • Conceptual vocabulary of modern political philosophy: reason, method, natural law, natural right, the state of nature, civil society, the social contract, consent, civil law, sovereignty, equality, liberty, propriety or property, etc.
  • Aims, strategy, structure and arguments of primary texts of modern political philosophy.
  • Tracking difficulties in contemporary political philosophy to fundamental assumptions established by modern political philosophy.

Call for Papers:

We are inviting submissions for talks, which should be about 20 minutes in length. We are particularly interested in current or future research projects, and especially welcome submissions from philosophers in an early stage of their academic career. To propose a talk, please send an abstract of approximately 500 words as a Word, TXT or PDF attachment to philconf@vse.cz . The abstract should be suitable for blind review, i.e. it should not contain any information that may identify you as the author. Please make sure that the e-mail to which the abstract is attached contains your name, institutional affiliation, and the title of the paper.
For passive participation in the conference, e-mail registration is required at philconf@vse.cz.
Both active and passive participation is free.

Important dates:

Deadline for acceptance of abstracts: August 1, 2020.
Confirmation of receipt of the contribution: by August 15, 2020.
Conference dates: September 17-18, 2020.
Deadline for receipt of full texts: September 31, 2020.

Venue:

The conference will take place at Prague University of Economics and Business, n. W. Churchilla 1938/4, Praha 3, Czech Republic. Due to concerns related to coronavirus epidemics, there will be also online virtual session. Participants unable to attend in person will have opportunity to present their paper online.
